What is the difference between Pacific and Pasifika?
Pacific generally refers to Pacific Island nations, regional Pacific contexts and people living within the Pacific region. In Australia, the term is often more closely associated with Melanesian communities and Pacific labour migration contexts, while in New Zealand it is more commonly associated with overseas Polynesian communities such as Samoan, Tongan and Cook Islands Māori communities. Pasifika is widely used in New Zealand and increasingly in Australia to describe Pacific diaspora communities living outside the islands. Pacific Toolbox works primarily within Pasifika audience and engagement contexts across Australia but we also have a presence in Samoa.
